Painting

In 1910 Carl Wilhelmson, along with the artist, illustrator and former pupil Yngve Berg, travelled to Spain. There they met a different light as well as a more colorful and contrasting population. The thorn scene from Ávila has Wilhelmson painted with so-called Weimar colours, resulting in a drier expression. The technique, not letting the paint completely cover the canvas, he makes use of this motif is a slight dallering expression. Art historian Osvald Sirén stated in a writing in 1905 that Carl Wilhelmson is neither a landscape painter nor a portrait painter ex professo, he is a figure artist. This opinion meant that he was an artist who dared to deal with larger figure compositions. We see among others examples of this painting.
