Habitation Areas at the Mann Site

View through CrossRef
The vast majority of Middle Woodland habitation sites in Ohio, Illinois, and the Southeast are relatively small, consisting of no more than a few households living side-by-side. For this reason, the immense habitation area at Mann deserves our close attention, as one of the earliest examples of larger-scale population aggregation in the Eastern Woodlands. Magnetometry survey and other data sources suggest that the habitation areas of the site may be as large as 24 hectares in size. Dense habitation features are found on the upper and lower terraces at Mann and appear to be mostly concentrated on areas of higher elevation. Radiocarbon dates suggest that residents were present throughout the entirety of the site’s use, from ca. A.D. 200 to 600, indicating that the Mann site’s occupation went hand-in-hand with the construction and use of the mounds.
