Princely Equestrian Portrait

Against a green background and facing left is a mounted prince. He bears a dark mustache and full, dark beard. He wears a red turban held by a gold band a decorated with a black plume, which denotes his princely status. The figure also wears a gold overcoat that exposes his long, pink robe (jama) and waist sash (patka) with decorative ends. His left hand holds onto the edge of his jacket while the right holds onto the reins of his trotting, caparisoned horse. Behind him is a large, black shield (dhal) and the sheath of his sword (talwar) can be seen from the other side. In front of his horse is an attendant wearing a striped turban, a red jacket, a waist sash, cropped trousers, and red shoes. He holds in his left hand a recurved bow. The prince looms large in the painting in comparison to the attendant, in order to signify his status. Pahari style.
