THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN THE JOURNALISM OF OSYP NAZARUK

View through CrossRef
The views of the Ukrainian public and political figure, writer, journalist, publicist and lawyer Osyp Nazaruk on the events of the First World War are analyzed. It is noted that by 1914 he had already become popular as the former head of the Vienna student «Sich» and the Lviv «Academic Community» and a representative of the Ruthenian-Ukrainian Radical Party, who, with the beginning of the Great War, after a short stay in the Talerhof camp, actively participated in cooperation with the Union for the Liberation of Ukraine, and later – in the work of the General Ukrainian Council and became one of the co-organizers of the Press Office of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen. It is established that in the pages of his memoirs and journalistic works published during the Great War, Osyp Nazaruk focused primarily on the course of the battles on the section of the Eastern Front that ran through the Carpathian and Galician territories, and the participation of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen in it. The following works of the author are considered: «In the Footsteps of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen», «Over the Zolota Lypa river: In the Camps of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen», «From the Bloody Path of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen», articles on the pages of the «Bulletin of the Union of the Liberation of Ukraine» («Russian Lapel», «Over the Strypa river», «Over the Upper Strypa river»). It is summarized that they are dedicated to the topic of the role and goals of Ukrainians during the Great War, substantiating the idea of the revival of an independent Ukrainian state as a result of the struggle of the Central Powers with the Russian Empire, and most importantly – collecting materials and documents from the history of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, describing this military phenomenon and depicting it as one of the truly effective forces that could, through their faithful service, courage, and at the same time – selfless patriotism, first achieve the expansion of the rights of Ukrainians in Austrian Galicia and, with a favorable course of the military campaign, – lay the foundations for the restoration of Ukrainian statehood lost in the past in the event of victory over the enemy – Russia.
