The transition to parenthood
View through CrossRef
The focus of attention during the transition to parenthood is still with the birth process and the physical health of the mother and baby. This article considers current research into the emotional and social implications of the transition to parenthood, for men as well as for women, and whether this can be applied to support families effectively. Research clearly shows that some couples cope better than others during the transition to parenthood, often showing sensitivity and understanding to each other's needs. Is it the midwife's role to consider the holistic care of the family and to promote communication skills and conflict resolution skills? Should ante-natal classes be co-facilitated with health visitors to really prepare couples for the transition to parenthood?
