Poem 14: The minister of the left

Ichiyūsai Kuniyoshiga I様様様 Common series of Kuniyoshi, Hiroshige and Kunisada about the famous collection of poems “Hyakunin isshu IIII” (hundred poets with a hundred poems). In the yellow striped field above, the 14th poem of the collection, written by Minamoto no Tōru Im (822-895), bearing the official title “Minister of the Left District” (= Kawara no Sadaijin; Kawara is the name of the borough), and was thus one of the three most important state councilors at the Imperial Court. The picture shows Chiyo, the madman of Fumi-hiroge (Fumi-hiroge no kyōjo) with a letter in his hand. She was a literarily interested woman who, after her husband’s death, always carried a letter in a casket. On a full moon she is said to have read out it with a loud voice near the Gojō Bridge.
