De la parole picturale à l’écriture : Description des différents systèmes d’écriture et analyse de l’écriture littéraire wolof

View through CrossRef
Abstract: One of Senegal's main characteristics is its linguistic richness. Among the country's thirty and so languages, Wolof stands out for its history and dynamism. It is recognized that orality is an essential feature of African languages, but today, languages such as Wolof has gained access to written communication. The question of how to write Wolof faces numbers of problems, and is proving to be quite complex. For this reason, it would be interesting firstly to describe the trajectory of the history of Wolof writing, and secondly to analyze the blocking factors hindering its development. In this article, we present a study of the different graphic systems of Wolof, focusing on certain ideogram systems created by Wolof speakers. The written Wolof language is increasingly becoming the preferred working tool of national and transnational literary writers, and goes beyond the idea of a simple transposition of ideas and knowledge from Wolof society to another society. It is truly a process underpinned by conscious reflection. Our analysis of Wolof literature has led us to focus on the work of Cheikh Moussa Ka. By revisiting his poems, we will focus on the symbolic construction in Sufi poetry. We will also analyze the choice of Arabic to serve his local language (Wolofal). Wolof literary writing in Latin characters is fairly recent, but it has enabled the development of Wolof literature. In this article, we'll be looking at the debate surrounding the language of literary creation, and highlighting the perceptions and approaches of writers who have emerged from the French school system.
