A Lost Pearl of The Russian Musical Culture: The «C.M. Schroder» Piano Building Company in Its Later Years (1885–1918)

The "C.M. Schroder" piano company (1816–1918) saw its instruments gaining worldwide acclaim in the last thirty years of its existence. It was then when the factory’s owners greatly contributed to the advancement of music life in Russia, the contribution never to be appreciated by musicologists. Through its close ties with prominent figures in the world of music the "C.M. Schroder" company promoted the Russian music culture by making generous donations, making its grand pianos available for concerts and extensive concert tours, and arranging performances by European celebrities. The year 1889 saw an Anton Rubinstein Award instituted, with its grand piano prize being awarded for more than twenty years to the best pianist graduate from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, with Sergei Prokofiev among the winners. The suspension of the factory's operation during World War I followed by the 1918 nationalization caused this largest piano builder and active participant in the music life to cease to exist, it becoming an irretrievable loss to the nation.
