The Sorge-Ozaki Spy Ring
View through CrossRef
Abstract
This chapter provides a concise examination of one of the most famous Soviet spy rings of World War II. The Sorge network operated in Tokyo from 1933-1941 and achieved remarkable penetration of both German diplomatic/military and Japanese government circles. Many credit the Tokyo spy ring with providing intelligence that may have saved Moscow from falling to Nazi forces in late 1941. The chapter focuses not just on Richard Sorge himself, but on other key figures, including Ozaki Hotsumi, Max Clausen, and Miyagi Yotoku. Assessment is provided of the characteristics of the spy ring that led to their success. These include expertise, charisma, and large quantities of luck. Furthermore, the chapter untangles the competing stories of what led to Sorge and Ozaki’s ultimate arrest and execution.
