Rome, 27 Piazza di S. Pietro in Vaticano

The engraving shows a section of St. Peter’s Square, which was architecturally designed between 1656 and 1667 under Pope Alexander VII (1655-1667) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini. In light supervision, the Southern Colonade is shown here. The two fountains as well as the obelisk, originally from the circus of Nero, were installed in 1586 under Pope Sixtus V at the present location in the center of the square. A piece of the garden of the Palazzo Barberini can be seen in the background.
