Abstract Arguing that mental health and mental illness are not merely opposite ends of one single measurement continuum, Keyes (2002, 2005, 2006) proposes that mental health should be viewed as a complete state consisting of two dimensions: (1) the mental illness continuum and (2) the mental health continuum. Furthermore, symptoms of mental health consist of individuals' subjective well‐being, which in turn reflects their perceptions and evaluations of their lives in terms of their affective states and their psychological and social functioning.
