The chapter shows how in giving Benucci a three-year contract, Emperor Joseph was committing himself to keeping the Italian company. It discusses the leading composers Giovanni Paisiello and Giuseppe Sarti, and the former being given the first big opera commission. Giuseppe Viganoni was engaged to sing the primo mezzo-carattere roles, thereby freeing up Mandini to sing buffo-caricato roles. The local singer Caterina Cavalieri comes into focus as a second-rank singer. Mid-season, the second-tier prima donna Luisa Laschi made her debut but only slightly lessened Storace’s load as prima donna.
