16th-century viatorium

View through Europeana Collections
The drawing shows three views of a sixteenth-century viatorium, and one view of a nineteenth century example from Smyna. The instrument is described by Sir Henry Ellis (see Bibliography) as a mariner's compass, and is portable, with a sundial, compass, and calender. The other example is for comparison.
