This chapter highlights Jean-Jacques Rousseau's letter to Paul-Claude Moultou on June 15, 1762. In this letter, Rousseau informs Moultou that he has retreated to Yverdun to evade his arrest. He claims that it was necessary to flee so that the people involved in the publication of his works would not be implicated, leaving the Parlement of Paris joyful at his evasion and “very resolved to follow the refusal to appear in court as far as they could go.” Rousseau then reiterates that he has done nothing against the laws. He also addresses why he did not take refuge in Geneva, saying that he feels that “it is not in the fatherland that an unfortunate outlaw ought to take refuge.”
