LONG STORY SHORT: AN OVERVIEW OF ANT TAXONOMY AND ANT TAXONOMISTS IN BRAZIL
View through CrossRef
Brazil, the largest country in South America, boasts the greatest diversity of ants in the Americas and ranks among the most species-rich countries globally. It has long been recognized as a key hub for myrmecology, driven by its remarkable biodiversity and a rich history of research in ant ecology and taxonomy. However, mapping ant species and developing a comprehensive understanding of them remains a significant challenge. Here, we present an overview of the state of art in ant taxonomy and the work of ant taxonomists in Brazil. Early taxonomic studies in the country were initiated by European naturalists. Over the years, Brazilian research institutes and universities have expanded their structure, bringing in new professionals, broadening graduate programs, and pushing the boundaries of ant research, including taxonomy. The nationalization of scientific production, combined with increasing collaboration among researchers, has shifted the field from individual, single-author taxonomic descriptions to team-based approaches. The establishment of the Brazilian Ants Course & Consortium and the growing expertise in ant taxonomy underscore Brazil's status as a global leader in myrmecological research. Taxonomists primarily rely on voucher specimens stored in museums, universities, and laboratory collections to expand our understanding of biodiversity despite ongoing challenges. The growth of scientific output, the training of new taxonomists, and the advancement of analytical techniques have positioned Brazil's myrmecological community to effectively tackle complex taxonomic and evolutionary questions.
