ABSTRACT
Tous ces gens, Mariana... (1959) is a story written by Maria Judite de Carvalho, whose size contradicts the nominal syntagm of the title. The 91 pages of the book are indicative of the reticence that characterises the author's writing.Maria Judite de Carvalho's work is pioneering in its rigour and parsimony of style, which echo the censorship imposed by the Salazarian dictatorship and the selfcensorship that is its by-product. Our study focuses on the mechanism of
elliptical procedures and their role in the construction of this restraint. We will attempt to identify their ideological significance in a context marked in Portugal by the restriction of individual and collective freedoms.
