AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF SYMPTOMATIC MULTIPLE UTERINE FI-BROIDS: A CASE REPORT
View through CrossRef
Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are benign smooth muscle tumours of the uterus that commonly affect women of reproductive age. They often present with clinical manifestations such as heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), painful menstruation (dysmenorrhoea), pelvic discomfort, and sometimes pressure-related symptoms on adjacent organs. In modern gynaecological practice, large or multiple fibroids are primarily managed surgically, typically with procedures such as myomectomy or hysterectomy. However, a substantial number of patients prefer to avoid surgical intervention.
This case report describes the successful Ayurvedic management of a 43-year-old female patient presenting with spasmodic dysmenorrhoea and heavy menstrual bleeding persisting for over one year. Ultrasonography revealed a bulky uterus with multiple intramural myomas and areas of necrosis. The patient was advised a transabdominal hysterectomy by an allopathic gynaecologist but declined surgical management and opted for a conservative Ayurvedic approach. She was treated at the Gynaecology OPD of Pt. Khushilal Sharma Government Autono-mous Ayurved Medical College & Hospital, Bhopal, where she underwent a combination of Uttarbasti proce-dures and internal Shamana therapies over a period of three months.
The Ayurvedic regimen included Uttarbasti with Kasisadi tail and Shatavari ghrita, along with Shaman Chikitsa in the form of oral medications. The treatment protocol aimed to pacify the vitiated doshas, improve local circu-lation, reduce pelvic congestion, and promote symptomatic relief. At the end of three months, the patient report-ed a significant reduction in menstrual bleeding, marked relief from spasmodic dysmenorrhoea and overall im-provement in quality of life. No adverse effects were observed throughout the treatment period.
