THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE WAR OF OCTAVIAN AND SEXTUS POMPEY FOR SICILY ON THE EXAMPLE OF MORGANTINA
View through CrossRef
The article deals with the little-studied period of the history of Sicily at the beginning of the Principate era and the state of Sextus Pompey. The main focus is paid to the consequences of the civil wars of the 1st century BC, which significantly affected the socio-economic development of the region. The author analyzes archaeological and numismatic data, as well as literary sources to reconstruct the historical context and evaluate Octavian's actions against the cities of Sicily that supported Sextus Pompey. The article pays special attention to the destruction of Morgantina and other settlements. The author concludes that the punitive operations of Octavian and his legates led to a significant decline of the region, which began to recover only by the end of the first century BC.
