Sir Edward Bunbury [1] London (by 1895) sold; [through Sotheby London “Bunbury sale ” June 15-23 1896]. Henry Osborne O’Hagan [2] London (by 1908) sold; [through Sotheby London “O’Hagan sale ” May 5-9 1908 lot 42 (1 of 4)]. [Henry Chapman Philadelphia (by 1921)] sold; to Edward Stanley Gotch Robinson [3] London (1921-1941) sold; to Arthur Stone Dewing [4] Cambridge MA (from 1941) lent; to Fogg Art Museum (from 1965)
1. Edward H. Bunbury (1811-1895). This previous ownership was noted in O’Hagan Sotheby 1908 sale catalogue. Lot 94 in the Bunbury sale catalogue could match but it cannot be confirmed as the lot is not illustrated in the plates. The buyer is listed as “Raveno” in one annotated catalogue and as “[..]nwell” in another. A. S. Dewing wrote on his inventory card: “From Bunbury coll. Robinson” “Robinson bought Henry Chapman February 23 1921 ” and “Robinson collection no. 467A August 26 1941.”
2. Henry Osbourne O’Hagan (1853-1930). An annotated catalogue states that the lot was bought by “Mayer”.
3. Edward Stanley Gotch Robinson (1887-1976).
4. Arthur Stone Dewing (1880-1971).
