Abstract
This fine and consistent composer, whose work is widely admired yet unwarrantedly neglected, will be greatly missed. Mirages, a substantial and passionate cycle, is a superb example of Alwyn’s assurance, musical depth, refinement and warm conviction. Almost every song is a tour de force in itself: the baritone’s resources will be fully stretched and the invigorating piano parts are similarly testing.
