Stuart Altmann is a founding figure in primate behavioral ecology. As part of his Ph.D. research at Harvard, completed in 1960, he produced seminal work on the Cayo Santiago rhesus monkeys. With his wife Jeanne Altmann, he helped found the long‐term research on the Amboseli baboons, which still continues today. Among his important contributions are an emphasis on the link between a species' ecology and its behavior, and an appreciation of the importance of precise mathematical models of both demographic and behavioral processes.
