L'autrice analizza tre racconti di Joseph Conrad come rappresentazione delle diverse forme di ombra di cui parla Mario Trevi: ombra personale, ombra come archetipo, ombra come immagine archetipica. Si tratta di tre racconti di mare. Viene proposta l'immagine del vascello come metafora della psiche in cui il capitano rappresenta il complesso dell'Io alle prese con difficoltà interne, e con le difficoltà esterne rappresentate dal clandestino imbarcato segretamente, dalla febbre tropicale e dal tempo avverso e infine dall'incontro con l'immagine della distruttività nella figura di Kurtz.
