Jeannette Beveridge, the sister of welfare state architect William Beveridge, married the socialist historian R. H. Tawney in 1909. Thereafter her life as a factory inspector, historian and writer, is dwarfed in historical accounts by her role as Tawney’s wife. The way in which she is castigated for being a poor housewife illustrates the assumptions commonly made about marriage and gender.
