The Anniversary Address of Presidents of the Royal Society has increasingly, over the years, been devoted to matters of science policy in one form or another, This is perhaps inevitable and it reflects the role that the Society plays nationally and internationally. But there were occasions in the past when the President spoke on a strictly scientific theme, describing a recent advance or surveying some field on which he was an expert. I have felt that, at least once during my five years, I should attempt something similar. We all get tired of discussing policy and itch to get back to real science, so I decided to take the plunge this year and devote myself to Mathematics. Award of Medals, 1994 Royal Medals Other Awards
