From Michael Atiyah to the 21st century

This chapter looks at the four holders of the Savilian chair of geometry in the second half of the 20th century – Michael Atiyah, Ioan James, Richard Taylor, and Nigel Hitchin – concentrating mainly on the first of these. Michael Atiyah was Savilian professor for only six years, from 1963 to 1969, but he spent most of the following two decades in Oxford as a Royal Society professor, and his impact on the field of mathematics, in Oxford, in the UK, and internationally, was immense.
