In Tonga, riches can be calculated with reference either to handicrafts (koloa), made by women and passed on from generation to generation, or to the oral memory of one’s family lineage. Through her Tongan best friend and her daughters, Patricia Ledyard, a papalangi (Tongan for ‘Westerner’) gained access and even made her own contribution to this Tongan heritage. Through her writing, she has become the white link in the Tongan heritage.
