Abstract
The years spent in Frankfurt saw the emergence of three marked devel¬opments in Percy Grainger’s character and music. They were to become the nuclei around which the rest of his life and personality growth revolved and for this reason these years must be considered as the most crucial period of his life. In the order of importance given to them by Grainger himself, these three elements were: the development of unorthodox and colourful sexual appetites, the evolution of a highly idiosyncratic personal philosophy based on the concept of ‘racial charactology’, and the maturing of an individual musical style.
