James Baird and the Baird Trust: Industrial Philanthropy and Evangelical Activism in Victorian Scotland

View through CrossRef
In nineteenth-century Scotland, the family of Alexander Baird emerged as leaders in the extraction of coal and production of iron. Two of Alexander’s sons – William and James – took principal roles in the expansion of the business in the 1820s. William Baird and Company became an industrial giant, enriching the brothers and freeing them to pursue other ventures in politics, landholding, and charitable work. James Baird took a keen interest in supporting the territorial work of the Church of Scotland in the rapidly urbanising districts around the mines and ironworks. He endowed several parish churches, subscribed to the partial endowment of at least a hundred others, and donated an unheard of £500,000 to the established Church in 1873 to be held in trust. The deed of trust directed the funds towards ameliorating “the spiritual destitution [which] prevails among the poor and working population.” Despite his leading role in promoting a conservative vision of social Christianity, neither James nor the trust established in his name have received the scholarly attention their influence merits. This chapter remedies this by exploring the motivations for James Baird’s commitment to church extension and philanthropy and tracing the development of the Baird Trust’s work prior to 1900.
