Severe periodontitis and congenital cytomegalovirus: Cleft lip and cleft palate

View through CrossRef
AbstractSevere periodontitis lesions can harbor several hundred‐thousand copies of active cytomegalovirus, and this paper proposes that cytomegalovirus in maternal periodontitis can infect the fetus. Cleft lips and palates may be oral examples of congenital cytomegalovirus infection. Anti‐cytomegalovirus periodontal treatment is indicated for high‐risk women who exhibit severe periodontitis and weakened immune system and are contemplating pregnancy or are in the first trimester of pregnancy.
