Fashioning Miles Davis

View through CrossRef
Abstract This chapter argues that Miles Davis used clothing as a way of thinking through creative possibility. It proposes that criticism of the way he dressed in his later years is rooted in homophobic conceptions of black masculinity. Three televisual case studies provide evidence: an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street (1993), Davis’ acting role in Miami Vice (1985), and Spike Lee’s music video Tutu Medley (1986). For Davis, the act of dressing was a form of play but also a way to unsettle his public image. The chapter draws on the literature of film and television studies as well as fashion studies, providing close textual analyses of the TV case studies. A detailed shot listing and fashion lookbook for the Tutu Medley music video is also provided.
