5. The zenith of the mathematical seaman

View through CrossRef
New solutions to the longitude problem led to a revision of the whole approach to the practice of navigation. ‘The zenith of the mathematical seaman’ explains that position would still be stated as a latitude and a longitude, but the two need not be found in separate and distinct operations. The sextant and chronometer became more closely associated and took on a new engagement with spherical trigonometry. Seamen still needed to follow a bearing and measure their course so dead reckoning remained routine, but was aided by improved instrumentation. These techniques still required the use of charts and the 19th century saw significant improvements in hydrographic survey and chart production.
