Fisherman I

View through Europeana Collections
The artworks "Fisherman I" and "Fisherman II" by Panos Charalambous belong to the thematic section "On Fishing/ Fish," one of his first major thematic works. This inspiration comes from the environment and activities of the fishermen on Lake Amvrakia and the multifaceted symbolism of fish. Using one of the most significant works of Cycladic frescoes as a starting point, the "Fisherman" from a prehistoric town in Akrotiri, Thera, the artist himself represents the motif of the fisherman. By placing these two artworks side by side, the two human figures face each other, creating a unique dialogue with tradition, connecting the present with the past. At the same time, this coexistence broadens the content of the work and its possibilities for communication with the viewer.
