The Lombard League/Milanese Party (1200–1225)

This chapter describes the Lombard League and the Milanese Party from 1200 to 1225. The first section examines the traces of the League in the first quarter of the thirteenth century. The second section describes the Milanese party. Documentation concerning the League drastically decreased in the first quarter of the thirteenth century. References to the League can be found in a second commitment by Otto of Brunswick to Pope Innocent III from around 1201 and in some papal letters related to them. The main reason behind the renewal of 1208 was again linked to the empire, since it probably derived from the rising fortune of Philip of Swabia. In the first quarter of the thirteenth century the Lombard League evolved into and was replaced by the Milanese party.
