Prophecy and the Prudent Reader

View through CrossRef
This chapter discusses how interpolation exposes sedimental layers of temporal understanding. At its core, prophecy is interpolative as it interrupts the narrative of a past sequence with an intrusive discourse that expands the temporal range and scope of historical knowledge. When it does forecast the future, prophecy produces an entanglement of the past moment when the predictions were made, the present of interpretation, and the future to which it refers. The chapter explains how prophecy testifies that human ambassadors can access divine information about the unknown in the present. Through prophecy, the audience of the Brut tradition is implicated in the negotiation of the timefulness of history, transmitted obliquely through symbolic discourse. The chapter also considers the extent of Merlin's prophecies.
