Abstract
Introduction:
During the medieval period in South India, physicians known as parahitās played a crucial role in healthcare, offering services without charge, while often receiving land or villages from the government. This study explores the contributions of these physicians, particularly focusing on Vaidya Lolambaraja, a prominent figure in the field.
Materials and Methods:
This historical analysis examines primary texts and historical records related to Vaidya Lolambaraja’s life and works, emphasizing his contributions to Ayurveda and the cultural context in which he operated.
Results:
Vaidya Lolambaraja (c. 1300–1360 ad), the son of Divakara and a court poet for King Harihara Raya of Vijayanagara, distinguished himself in various fields including Ayurveda, poetry, and military service. He authored several notable works, such as the kāvyas “Harīvilāsa” and “Sundara dāmōdaram” and the medical text “Vaidya-Jīvana.” This text, written in poetic form, covers significant medical topics like Aṣṭasthāna-parīkṣā and Cikitsā-prakaraṇa, showcasing his comprehensive knowledge.
