Abstract
ha d there been opinion polls in the eighteenth century, Baldassare Galuppi (1706–1785) would have been among the most frequently named as “greatest composer.” Not only were his operas and sacred works tremendously popular, but he enjoyed great esteem among musicians owing to the obvious high quality of his work. For over forty years the great courts of Europe vied for the services of the lauded chapel master of St. Mark’s in Venice, and young musicians everywhere carefully studied his scores.
