A landscape with cattle. In the centre of the picture is a large old tree which towers above the ground; behind it are several other trees. To the right is a group of cattle: some are lying in the shade, and three are emerging from the river which can just be seen in the bottom right corner. Two cows, one black, one white, stand facing us in the centre foreground. On the left of the scene is a large meadow towards which a group of cows wander. In the distance are trees and a church spire. "[it] was probably the most admired landscape of all in the Dawson Room at Nottingham Castle when the Prince & Princess of Wales opened the Exhibition in 1878 ... it then belonged to Mr Cooper of Bulwell & it was currently said that £1200 were offered & declined for it ... it's engraved in the 'Life of Henry Dawson' by his son."
