The Emerging Historian (1839)

Chapter 2 explores how the young Lincoln began to revere the utility of the past to the extent that he no longer relied on what others said about it but rather developed the skills and methods of the historian to gain his own insights to it. The chapter opens by exploring Lincoln’s deeply inquisitive nature, citing the accounts of his closest friends, who recalled that Lincoln’s relentless questioning and testing were essential elements of his nature. It proceeds to analyze how Lincoln would have picked up many of the skills and methods of the historian in his legal studies. It concludes by examining his first speech in which the tools of the historian are evident, his 1839 address on the Sub-Treasury.
