Portrait of the Greek statesman and orator Aeschines

View through National Gallery of Denmark
Copy in plaster acqured 1903 from a Roman copy of a lost, Hellenistic original, found completely devastated after the eruption of Vesuvius in the ruins of Villa dei Papiri in Herculaneum. Aeschines spoke up against Demosthenes in the Agora of Athens, discussing if the Athenians should or should not wage war on the Macedonian King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great. Aeschines spoke up against all others in favor of allying with Philip. Philip devastated the Athenian army in 236 BCE. Greece still has problems with recognizing Macedonia. Until the 20th Century, this sculpture was said to “embody the tranquil dignity of Genius.”
