Cosmic Meaning

Abstract I argue that even if god exists, Cosmic Meaning is unlikely to amount to much, especially in the ways in which it’s supposed to be uniquely important, i.e., by supposedly providing us with Ultimate Meaning, cosmic purpose, and cosmic value. Many argue that cosmic value provides us with Cosmic Meaning due to its perfect nature, its everlasting duration, its ability to makes sense of some value dilemmas, and its providing us with value from a cosmic perspective. But these Cosmic Meaning prospects prove disappointing (even cosmic justice, which isn’t as simple or satisfying as one might hope). Our cosmic impact and significance are not meaningfully different from our earthly significance, nor should we want them to be. An explanation of the cosmos that provides satisfactory explanatory Cosmic Meaning is unlikely. We must therefore conclude that Cosmic Meaning, while not impossible, is unlikely to be consequential, even assuming theological or supernatural wonders.
