View through Europeana Collections
Portrait of Friedrich Hoffmann. A chest pattern in the profile of the German medical practitioner. His gaze patterns the viewer. He wears a wig with braid, as well as simple clothes. Its activities are noted directly below. Friedrich Hoffmann gained extensive chemical and pharmacological knowledge from his father when he was a child. In 1678 he began studying medicine in Jena, and two years later he attended lectures in chemistry and pharmacology at the University of Erfurt. Again in Jena he obtained his doctorate and became Dean of Medicine. He then traveled to Holland and England, after which he became Hofmedicus and Landphysicus of the Principality of Minden and a year later in Halberstadt. When he heard that a new university was founded in Halle, he applied there and became professor of medicine and physics. In addition, he designed the statutes and seal of the Faculty of Medicine, was 48 times Dean of the Selected, five times Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy and Prorector. In addition, he became a member of the Leopoldina in 1696. The present leaf is circumcised. It was part of a copper engraving tableau with nine other portraits of various personalities around Halle and its surroundings, including Christian Wolff. The portrait of Hoffmann was on the top left and is labeled with the number 1. All portraits were made by Christoph Melchior Roth (1720-1798) as copper engravings, the signature of which was: "Chr: Melchi: Roth. fecit Noribergae. Tabula XXXIII’. The template for the Portrait was a painting by the French portrait painter Antoine Pesne (1683-1757), who also created a portrait by August Hermann Francke.
