SERGEY IVANOVICH TANEYEV AND JULES CONUS. TEACHER AND STUDENT

View through CrossRef
The article is devoted to the unique creative contacts between the great Master S. I. Taneyev and his pupil Ju. E. Conus. The mentor played a special role in the formation of the artist’s personality. Memories and epistolary writings from as far back as a century and a half ago revealed the essence of the relationship between teachers and students. The focus of this publication is on the diaries of S. I. Taneyev and the letters of Ju. E. Conyus to his teacher. The role of such artefacts is difficult to overestimate. They are the most authentic testimonies of what happened and thus serve as a source of credibility. This epistolary heritage provides a new perspective on the personality of the great teacher, Sergey Ivanovich Taneyev. The interaction of the two musicians is unique in that it started in the Moscow Conservatory and continued many years after the graduation of Ju. Conus and Taneyev’s resignation as Director. Sergey Ivanovich kept diaries for only 16 years, but the information contained therein is unique. It formed the basis for the reconstruction of the biography of Ju. E. Conus as a violinist, composer and teacher. Besides, the genius of Jules Eduardovich, undeservedly neglected by modern scholars, is revealed through the prism of his creative interaction with the teacher.
