Rome, 31st Parte di Campo Vaccino

View through Europeana Collections
The view is shown from the east on the Septimius-Severus arc, which is on the Forum Romanum (Campo Vaccino), at the feet of the Capitol. Behind him are the walls of nearby Capitol Square, as well as the bell tower of the Senatorenpalast. The remnants of the temple of Saturn can be seen to the left of the triangular arch (erroneously designated as a presumed Concordia temple in the caption). The column to the left of the tree is called Colonna Sola, but it is very likely the Colonna di Foca. Both triumphal arches and pillars appear lower on the engraving than today, as the terrain at Vasis time was at a different height. In the course of reconstruction in the 19 and In the 20th century the ground was dismantled, so that the foundations are now open. The oxen and discarded carts in the foreground indicate the then loss of meaning of the Forum Romanum, which until the 18th century bore the name “Kuhweide” (Campo Vaccino). Signature: G.
