A vacuum technology for coating TiCN-based cermets
View through CrossRef
A new vacuum technology for deposition of wear-resistant coatings on cermets of the TiCN–Ni–Mo system has been developed and introduced in industry on a large scale. The technology is based on a discovered phenomenon of the formation of a two-layer coating on the surface of the cermets due to interaction between the TiCN-based cermets and Cr vapors in a vacuum. The coating obtained in such a way comprises a thin inner layer composed of a Cr solid solution in Ni, and an outer layer composed of a mixture of (Cr,Ni)7C3 and (Cr,Ni)23C6. Results of the study on the structure, composition, and morphology of the coating as well as performance properties of the coated TiCN-based cermets are presented. Some advantages connected with the use of the technology developed are also given.

Title: A vacuum technology for coating TiCN-based cermets
