The Walker and the Wake

View through CrossRef
This paper has two points of departure. The first is the use of marginal phenomena to elucidate complex core con-ceptual questions, an approach that has been used to good effect in a wide variety of disciplines.1 One such question is “What is language?,” where one not uncontroversial research program looks at animal behavior that arguably resembles hu-man communication (e.g., bee dances, whale songs).2 Another question—which we insist on distinguishing sharply from the former — is “What is a language?” By this we refer both to the determination of the place at which one language stops and an-other begins (e.g., Danish/Norwegian, Kazakh/Kyrgyz) and to the potential distinction between a language and a dialect (e.g., Hochdeutsch/Bairisch, Modern Standard Arabic/Maghrebi).3We confine ourselves to this latter question.

A double-Gaussian wake model considering yaw misalignment
A wake steering has been known to effectively increase wind farm production by deflecting the upstream turbines’ wakes via yaw misalignment, thus minimizing their negative impacts ...

Impact of rotor solidity and blade number on wake characteristics of vertical-axis wind turbines
Wake interference between wind turbines is a major concern in wind farms and is primarily driven by the wake of upstream turbines. For vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs), although...

Statistical Analysis on The Near-Wake Region of RANS Turbulence Closure Models for Vertical Axis Tidal Turbine
The flow field in the near wake region (up to six turbine diameters downstream) of a tidal current turbine is strongly driven by the combined wake of the device support structure a...

Regulation of mismatch repair protein MutSα functions by its Walker A and Walker B motifs
The mismatch recognition protein MutSα is an MSH2‐MSH6 heterodimer. Mismatch binding by MutSα triggers a series of downstream mismatch repair (MMR) reactions, including interacting...

Lidar-based wake tracking for closed-loop wind farm control
Abstract. This work presents two advancements towards closed-loop wake redirecting of a wind turbine. First, a model-based wake tracking approach is presented which uses a nacelle-...
