Understanding Vitamin D Deficiency and Breast Pain: Reducing Cancer Fear and Promoting Women Health

View through CrossRef
Introduction: The increasing incidence of breast cancer in recent decades, coupled with its high mortality rate in developing countries, has contributed to heightened anxiety and a phobia of developing cancer among women. Late presentation of the disease remains a significant factor driving high mortality, further fueling this cancer-related anxiety. International awareness campaigns and breast cancer programs have promoted self-care and the habit of consulting doctors for even minor symptoms. This has led to a rise in patient visits to breast imaging departments. Among the various presenting complaints, Mastalgia (breast pain) is one of the most common symptoms reported by patients visiting breast care clinics. Mastalgia, or breast pain, is a frequently reported yet often misunderstood issue commonly linked to heightened concerns about breast cancer. It is a prevalent complaint among women seeking evaluation at breast cancer screening clinics. In many developing countries, such as Pakistan, vitamin D deficiency is widespread, making it a significant public health concern. This study aims to explore the potential link between vitamin D deficiency and the onset of breast pain, as well as to assess whether vitamin D supplementation could alleviate this discomfort. Methods: This prospective study period was from January 2022 to December 2022. A total of 260 patients were enrolled and subjected to measure their Vitamin D levels, fasting blood sugar, and hemoglobin level. 170 Patients presented with complaints of breast pain (Mastalgia) and were enrolled in group 1. 90 patients presented with complaints other than Mastalgia were labeled group 2 and taken as a control. Patients with known cases of breast cancer or a history of associated medical problems were excluded from the study. Data was collected, recorded, and analyzed by using SPSS 26 software. Results: The mean age of the patient was 33.1± 9.2 with a range of 20 to 55 years. 94.2 % of patients had variable degrees of Vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D deficiency was graded as mild, moderate, and severe. Moderate to severe Vitamin D deficiency was recorded in patients with Mastalgia versus the control group, with a p value of 0.0003 (<0.05 was taken as significant) Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency, a growing global health concern, is notably more prevalent in developing countries and appears to have a positive correlation with non-cyclical breast pain, a common symptom prompting visits to breast clinics with cancer concerns. While preliminary evidence suggests that Vitamin D supplementation may alleviate breast pain, continued research is essential to validate these findings and potentially offer a simple and effective treatment of Vitamin D supplements for this widespread issue
