Abstract
The Bookseller (1858) is a monthly magazine (and now virtual information source) detailing new publications for the book trade. In the nineteenth century its November issue was usually devoted to illustrated works in preparation for the lucrative Christmas trade in gift books. In 1861 two periodicals notable for their high-quality illustrations had also recently commenced, Good Words (1860—1906) and Once a Week (1859— 80). The Bookseller applauds the recent growth of the use of illustration for improving rather than sensational purposes.
