The Composer at The Keyboard: Beach Plays Beach
View through CrossRef
Abstract
At First Glance, Amy Beach’s performing schedule seems an active one, much more so than the Beaches’ marriage agreement-whether explicit or implicit-would have indicated, suggesting that despite all she had a concert career. The appearance, however, is deceptive. During her twenty-five years of marriage, Beach made on average one guest appearance and played one or occasionally two recitals each year. She had no concert manager and made no national or international tours; in fact, she hardly ever left Boston. As she said, her husband wanted her at home.
