Bhattacharyya, Kalidas
View through CrossRef
Kalidas Bhattacharyya (1911–1984, KDB) was a contemporary Indian philosopher. The early KDB (of the 1940s and 1950s) proclaimed that philosophy consists of undecidable alternatives, a standpoint influenced by the Jaina doctrine of
naya
, as well as by Krishnachandra Bhattacharyya's (KDB's father) thought. The later KDB (of the 1960s) is essentially a metaphysician. His metaphysical position is rooted in Advaita Vedānta and Śaivism, but is in constant dialogue with contemporary philosophical trends such as phenomenology. An interesting point in KDB, which corresponds with his father's thought, relates to the body as a tool or key towards freedom. The living body marks a level of subjectivity, through which the first hint of freedom is reached.
