AYURVEDIC MANAGEMENT OF UPAPLUTA YONIVYAPAD - A CASE STUDY
View through CrossRef
Introduction:
Pregnancy is a unique and sensitive phase in a woman's life, marked by an intense desire for a healthy baby. During this time, changes in the body’s structure, hormones, and immunity make women more prone to infec-tions like vulvovaginitis, which creates a great challenge for obstetricians and also leads to many complications such as low birth weight, PROM during pregnancy and puerperal sepsis, wound infections post-delivery. In Ayurveda, Upapluta Yonivyapada is described by Acharya Charaka, Vagbhata, and Sharangadhara. Still, only Acharya Charaka clearly mentioned it as a disorder of pregnant women, and thus, it can be compared to vulvo-vaginitis during pregnancy. According to Acharya Charaka, when a pregnant woman consumes a faulty diet, lifestyle aggravating Kapha, and also suppresses the desire to vomit and defecate, then vitiated Vayu, withhold-ing Kapha, affects the Yoni and produces abnormalities such as yellowish white vaginal discharge and this con-dition is known as Upapluta Yonivyapad. This case study emphasises the potential of Sthanika chikitsa to man-age the condition and improve maternal and fetal outcomes.
Materials and Methods: A 23-year-old female patient, with a history of amenorrhea since 35 weeks 1 day, pre-sented with complaints of white thick discharge per vagina since 10 days. The patient was managed through Sthanika Chikitsa – Yoni prakshalana with Triphala Kashaya, and Yoni varti -Dhatakyadi yoni varti.
Results: Following treatment, marked symptom relief was observed.
Discussion: Following the course of Sthanika chikitsa, there was a reduction in white discharge per vagina on examination. And she delivered a healthy male baby without any complications through an expected vaginal de-livery. This outcome suggests that Sthanika chikitsa can serve as effective in Upapluta yonivyapad.
Conclusion: This case demonstrates that Upapluta yonivyapad can be effectively managed through Sthanika chikitsa. The case highlights the relevance of Ayurvedic interventions in pregnancy.
